Is the Classic Chanel the new Hermes birkin?

Its not secret as far as bags are concerned the creme della creme for any fashion lover,  is the Hermes Birkin. In part, because it is such a unique bag, but also because it's not easy to get your hands on one. Like at all.  For a hand bag that carries a price tag starting at $20,000 its not a cheap bag by no means,  but even if you spend half your life saving for the bag. You cant walk into the Hermes store with your 20k in hand and ask for a Birkin. That is a fast way to be told 'Sorry we don't have that bag'. Just like the Da Vinci code, you need to have analysed the solar flare index, made sure the air temperature is above 24.5 degrees and that is 9am on the fourth Friday of the month.

To be offered a Birkin, you need to reach a status level, that is you spend a certain amount of money at the store throughout a year (and it also helps if you become friends with a sales associate) to be called up when the store receives stock. While Hermes doesn't actually release the amount of Birkins it produces a year, it has been leaked that number is somewhere among 200,000 world wide. If you are lucky enough to have spent to the level accepted and received  a call from a store it is only then you can buy a Birkin. Keep in mind, you don't get to choose the colour, size and hardware in most cases it is a 'this is what we have. Take it or leave it scenario'.

And so since The 90s this sales technique has proved quite fruitful for Hermes, making its handbags a status symbol and incredibly lucrative.

It seems another brand has decided in the year 2022 it will adopt this practise, and make its Classic bag with a  one per customer per year policy. And while Coco herself, designed one of the most iconic bags, i don't think she envisioned the frenzy that would be happening right now.

Ahh yes, my dear friends. Some genius at the Chanel store sat down and after two coffees said "I know how we can elevate our sales. Let's put a limit on the number of Chanel bags a single person can purchase in a year."

Enter a brand new limit on the Classic Chanel bag, but will it elevate this bag to be the ultimate competition to the current market  monopoly that is a Birkin?

Honestly, i'm on the fence about this. While both bags are expensive as they come. There is a lot more Chanel floating in the market than what there is Birkins. I think it will be a decade or so before the true affect of this new limit shows. In the meantime, if you can get your hands on a Chanel because one thing is for sure - their value just sky rocketed.

Vivrelle - game changer in the luxury retail market

I like many of you love fashion, but staying relevant in fashion can be really hard. From Valentino to Chanel and Celine to Prada, the seasons are bustling with new statement pieces that i want in my closet.  But fashion, especially luxury fashion can be such an expensive endeavour to keep up with. And with most of my paycheck going towards one bag, it can be very difficult to be constantly updating and changing my wardrobe. While most of us look at posts from high fashion influencers like Chiara Ferragni and Jessica Stein, and their ever evolving wardrobe of luxury handbags and fantasise about what new bag to add to our collection. They change bags weekly and move onto a different brand, size and colour, making it difficult to emulate these fashion icons. I love buying a new bag, the smell of new leather and the feeling of peeling the little plastic away from the clasp (is probably my favourite part) no matter the brand, size or colour i find it just as exciting no matter whic...

COVID impact on luxury

2020 has been one giant... i'm just going to say it Cluster duck of a year. But from trial comes triumph, with some companies absolutely flourishing and some gurgling down the toilet. The unfortunate need for companies to pivot, has left some with no choice but to close down. From fashion shows being streamed online, and shop closures. Luxury has relied heavily on their online presence to continue their revenue and trading through the pandemic. With many economist predicting an economic down turn, decrease in sales and all round shrinkage in the luxury niche.  I am of the opinion that the luxury category was only minimally affected by this crisis, and i think the recent black Friday sales have proved that the desire for luxury items is well and truly alive and well. With Valentino nearly selling out of their sale items within the first 48 hours.  I know crazy right?! and Valentino wasn't the only luxury brand that experienced literal sell out crowds, with Dior, Balenciag...
